Tips For Protecting Your Single-Family Rental Property During Fire Season

System - Tuesday, July 27, 2021

If you own a single-family rental property in Atlanta, you know that the fire season is one of the deadliest times of year because some single family homes can catch fire in just minutes.

This is why it's important for landlords to take the time to ensure that their rental properties are ready for fire season the following these simple tips.

Tip #1 - Remove Vegetation From The Exterior Of The Home

When it doesn't rain in Atlanta, it's not uncommon for trees and other vegetation to become dried out an excellent material for fires.

Thankfully, landlords can take initiative now by removing dead vegetation from at least 30 feet of the property that they own.

Doing this will provide fire fighters with a valuable buffer that they can use to protect a home should other homes catch fire in a neighborhood.

Tip #2 - Encourage Tenants To Do A Property Clean-up

Once the vegetation surrounding a rental property is cleaned up, the next thing that landlords should do is encourage their tenants to remove trash, debris, and flammable materials from the rental property.

Although most tenants don't intentionally leave materials sitting out at to catch fire, most people don't realize that common everyday items that they use can catch fire, so it's important to encourage your tenants to take an inventory of things that they leave outside and remove potential items which could prove to be an excellent source of kindling should fire strike the area where your property is located.

Tip #3 - Invest In Fire Extinguishers And Smoke Detectors

Last of all, the most important, another very important thing that you must do to protect your rental property from fire is to invest in fire extinguishers and smoke detectors for your property.

Having a smoke detector in every room of your rental home, and at least two fire extinguishers, will ensure that your tenants will be alerted of a potential fire and have the opportunity to protect themselves.
